China’s first “sky train” test has been completed  on a portion of controlled track in Chengdu. The two-car set has a capacity of more than 200 passengers and travel at speeds of up to 60 km/h. It is powered by onboard batteries which would be recharged during stations stops, making it the world’s first battery-powered suspension railway.

The suspension monorail vehicle has been designed for use in smaller cities and ‘scenic places’ has been unveiled by CRRC. CRRC said the concept offered lower costs than a metro, with the ability to negotiate steeper gradients and tighter curves.

Its design is inspired by the giant panda, which is native to Sichuan province of which Chengdu is the capital. Experts believe that they are perfect for public transportation in third and fourth tier cities, as well as in scenic spots.
